Welcome to this presentation, All About Retirement Plan Administration. We have a few
announcements before we get started. The information contained in this presentation is current
as of the day it was presented and shouldn't be considered official guidance. No identification
with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings and products is intended or should
be inferred. This program is being recorded and will be maintained under federal recordkeeping
laws. Now let's get started. Employee Plans (EP), part of the IRS Tax Exempt Government Entities
Division, is responsible for helping plan sponsors and benefit practitioners understand and
comply with the tax laws associated with retirement plans and IRAs. The first step to gaining a
better understanding about retirement plans is to visit the IRS website, Tax Information for
Retirement Plans. During this discussion, you'll learn how to: Select the right plan; correct plan
errors; maintain your plan; and file the correct forms.There are different ways to access the
information. We'll start with the left-hand pane of the Retirement Plans site. You can choose:
News Topics; IRAs; Types of Retirement Plans; Required Minimum Distributions Retirement Plans; FAQs
Published Guidance Forms & Publications; Correcting Plan Errors; Requesting Educational Services;
and Webinars for Tax Exempt & Government Entities. As an example, if you need information about
selecting a plan, you'll scroll to the 4rd link:Types of Retirement Plans. After selecting the
Types of Retirement Plans link, you can learn more about: Individual Retirement Arrangements
(IRAs); Roth IRAs; 401(k) Plans; 403(b) Plans; SIMPLE IRA Plans (Savings Incentive Match Plans for
Employees); SEP Plans (Simplified Employee Pension); SARSEP Plans (Salary Reduction Simplified
Employee Pension); Payroll Deduction IRAs; Profit-Sharing Plans; Defined Benefit Plans; Money
Purchase Plans; Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs); Governmental Plans; 457 Plans;
409A Nonqualified Deferred Compensation Plans; and Help with Choosing a Retirement. You can access
the same information by locating the header in the middle of the Retirement Plans page titled:
Retirement Plan Administration. In the 1st column, under the sub header Choosing Your Plan,
select Choosing a retirement plan. That link will lead you to the page called: Help with Choosing
a Retirement Plan where you will select the 1st link, Types of Retirement Plans, in the center of
the page…which will take you to the same webpage about types of retirement plans shown earlier.
Practitioners who want to learn about correcting plan errors have two information access points.
One is in the left pane of the Tax Information for Retirement Plans webpage. Click on Correcting
Plan Errors, which goes to information about the Employee Compliance Resolution System (or
EPCRS) used to make retirement plan corrections. Another way to get to the same information is by
selecting the Correcting Plan Errors link just below the sub header Maintaining Your Plan in the
center column of the Retirement Plan Administration portion of the webpage. Under the Maintaining
Your Plan subheading, you'll find Resources for Benefits Practitioners. Here you'll find more
information to help keep your plan compliant. Additional information you'll find on the Resources
for Benefits Practitioners page include links to webpages on: Amend or Update Plan Operational
Compliance List Determination; Opinion and Advisory Letters; Examinations and Enforcement. There is
also a link to EP Abusive Tax Transactions information. The IRS is engaged in extensive efforts
to curb abusive tax shelter transactions. This link provides a list of those transactions that
require disclosure and other resources. The following link is Approved Nonbank Trustees and
Custodians. The IRS maintains a list of entities approved, under Treasury Regulations Section
1.408-2(e), to serve as nonbank trustees or custodians. The last link on this page is Additional
Resources for Benefits Practitioners. This includes disaster relief information; retirement plan
check-ups; questions benefits practitioners can ask to better understand their clients' plans;
an overview of the office of Employee Plans; and videos and mini-courses. We'll close this
presentation by providing you with links that provide a better understanding of your filing and
reporting requirements. They are: Forms and publications; Reporting and disclosure requirements;
Form 5500 Corner Form; 8955-SSA Resources; Form 5330 Corner; and Reporting IRA and retirement plan
transactions. You access these links by locating the Filing and Reporting Requirements section
under the subheading Retirement Plan Administration in the middle of the webpage. Thank you for
attending this presentation.
